Neatness and tools first
A scoring diagram is a clear one. Use a sharp pencil and a ruler for straight lines, keep it large enough to label, and draw lightly first so you can correct it. Messy, tiny diagrams lose marks simply because the examiner cannot see what you meant.
Label everything and use arrows
Most diagram marks are label marks:
- Name each component, force, ray or field line.
- Show direction with arrows: forces as arrows from the object, light rays with arrowheads along the path.
- Add values or units where the question gives them.
An unlabelled arrow or an unnamed force often earns nothing even if the drawing is otherwise correct.
Get the physics of the diagram right
Each diagram type has rules examiners check:
- Reflection: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, both measured from the normal.
- Refraction: the ray bends toward the normal entering a denser medium and away when leaving.
- Lenses and mirrors: draw the standard rays, such as the ray parallel to the axis passing through the focal point.
- Free-body diagrams: show each force as a separate labelled arrow from the body.
Circuits and fields
Use standard circuit symbols and connect components clearly, showing the correct series or parallel arrangement. For magnetic fields, draw field lines from north to south with arrows and correct spacing to show strength.
Practise the standard diagrams
A fixed set of diagrams appears again and again across the syllabus. Practise drawing each from memory until it is quick and correct, and check your labels and angles against worked solutions. If ray diagrams or free-body diagrams keep costing marks, a short one-to-one session correcting them is usually enough to fix the habit.
