Not all questions ask the same thing
SPM Physics questions are not all the same type. They range along a spectrum, from straightforward recall to applying physics in unfamiliar situations, and each level asks something different from your child. Knowing the difference explains why a student can ace one kind of question and stumble on another.
Recall and definition questions
At the simplest level, some questions test whether your child can state a fact or definition. These reward precise memorising in the standard wording. There is a limit to how far pure memorising takes a student, but getting definitions exactly right is a genuine source of marks that many lose through vague phrasing.
Conceptual questions
These ask your child to explain why or how something happens: why a ball slows down, why a metal rod feels colder than wood, how a wave behaves. Memorising an example is not enough; the student must actually understand the idea and express it clearly. This is where understanding-based study pays off over rote learning.
Applied and real-world questions
The most demanding questions place familiar physics in an unfamiliar context, a scenario the student has never seen. The physics is the same, but it is dressed in a real-world situation, so the student has to recognise which concept applies and transfer it. These reward flexible understanding, not memorised patterns.
Why this matters for revision
- A student who only memorises can handle recall but freezes on applied questions.

- Practising varied question types, not just repeating similar ones, builds the flexibility these questions demand.
How to prepare for all three
Build in layers: memorise definitions precisely, understand each concept well enough to explain it in your own words, then practise applying it to different scenarios. Doing many kinds of past-style questions, rather than the same type repeatedly, trains your child to recognise the physics inside an unfamiliar question. A one-to-one teacher can push exactly this skill by asking your child to explain reasoning aloud and tackle unfamiliar applications with guidance.
