Drawing rules for the exam

Follow the syllabus conventions: 2 px lines, arrows for rays and forces, standard circuit symbols, and clearly labelled quantities. Neat, labelled diagrams score full marks.

What this diagram shows

In a series circuit the same current flows through every component; the total resistance is R₁ + R₂ + …

Study both the labelled version and the unlabelled one on this page, then redraw it from memory and check every label.

How to draw and label it in the exam

Follow the SPM drawing conventions: use a sharp pencil and a ruler, draw rays and forces as straight lines with arrowheads showing direction, use the standard circuit symbols, and label every quantity clearly. In the exam the label is usually where the mark is.

Common labelling mistakes

  • Leaving an arrowhead off a ray, force or field line, so direction is lost.
  • Unlabelled axes, points or components, an unlabelled diagram rarely scores full marks.
  • Freehand lines where a ruler is expected, or a scale too small to read.

Frequently asked questions

Can I practise this without a printer?
Yes, open the unlabelled version on screen and redraw it on paper, then check against the labelled one.
Which chapter is this from?
Electricity.
Do neat diagrams really earn marks?
Yes. In Paper 2 and Paper 3 the labels and correct conventions are exactly what the mark scheme rewards.
