The process of adding a small, controlled amount of impurity to a pure semiconductor to change its electrical properties.
In exam terms
Doping is the process of adding a small, controlled amount of impurity atoms to a pure semiconductor to change its electrical properties. Adding the right impurity greatly increases the number of charge carriers, so the doped semiconductor conducts much better than the pure material.
The amount added is tiny but carefully controlled.
Example of correct use: doping pure silicon with phosphorus adds extra free electrons, producing an n-type semiconductor that conducts more readily than undoped silicon.

Do not confuse doping with simply heating a semiconductor. Both raise conductivity, but doping adds permanent impurity atoms to supply extra charge carriers, while heating only temporarily frees more of the material's own electrons.
In Paper 2 you may be asked to define doping or to explain how it changes conductivity; state that a controlled impurity is added and that this increases the number of majority charge carriers.
