The label is usually the mark
In most diagram questions the mark is awarded for the correct label, not for artistic quality. Treat labelling as a scoring task.
- Draw a clear, straight line from your label to the exact part it names, using a ruler.
- Write the correct physics term; a vague or wrong word loses the mark even if the line points to the right place.
- Do not let label lines cross or point ambiguously between two parts.
When asked to complete a diagram, add exactly what is requested, such as a missing component, an arrow, or a line, and nothing extra. Reading the command word matters here too: label, draw, complete and mark each ask for a specific action.
Standard conventions you must follow
Marks depend on using the accepted conventions, so follow them exactly.
- Ray diagrams: draw rays as straight lines with arrows showing direction, use solid lines for real rays and dashed lines for the normal or construction lines, and mark the image position clearly.
- Circuit diagrams: use standard symbols, place an ammeter in series and a voltmeter in parallel, and draw connecting wires as straight lines meeting at right angles.
- Field lines: show direction with arrows, for a magnetic field running from north to south outside the magnet.
- Force diagrams: draw each force as an arrow from the point of action, labelled with its name and, where known, its value and unit.
An arrow without a direction, or a circuit symbol drawn wrongly, will not score.
Neatness, tools and completeness
Presentation protects the marks your knowledge has earned.
- Use a sharp pencil and a ruler for all straight lines and rays so the diagram is precise and easy to mark.
- Keep the diagram uncrowded; leave space so labels are readable.
- Complete every part the question asks for, and check arrows have a clear direction.
- If a calculation appears alongside a diagram, still show the formula, substitute with units, and give the answer with its unit, for example v = fλ, so v = 50 Hz × 0.4 m, giving v = 20 m s⁻¹.
