What Paper 1 contains
Paper 1 (4531/1) is the objective paper. It has 40 items worth 40 marks and you have 1 hour 15 minutes.
Every question is compulsory. Most items are multiple-choice with four options, and some are multiple-combination items that ask which set of statements is correct.
Scoring is dichotomous: each item is worth 1 mark for the correct answer and 0 for a wrong one. There is no partial credit and no penalty for guessing, so you should never leave a blank.
The items follow the subject-wide 5:3:2 difficulty spread, meaning a large share are accessible if your basics are secure. A scientific calculator is allowed, and remember there is no formula sheet, so any formula you need must come from memory.
A working strategy for 40 questions
With 75 minutes for 40 items you have about 1.9 minutes per question (75 min ÷ 40 = 1.875 min per question). That is enough time only if you do not stall on any single item.
- Make a first pass answering everything you know quickly; flag harder items and return to them.
- For multiple-combination items, judge each statement true or false, then match to the option that fits.
- Eliminate clearly wrong options first, which raises your odds on the rest.
- Recall the needed formula before you calculate, since none is provided.
Keep the calculator for genuine arithmetic; many items test reasoning, not computation.
Answering technique on the answer sheet
Paper 1 answers are shaded on a separate answer sheet, so protect those marks with careful transfer.
- Shade one bubble fully and darkly per item; erase changes completely.
- Check the question number matches the row you are shading, especially after skipping an item.
- Because scoring is 1 or 0 with no penalty, answer every item, even if the last few are educated guesses.
- Leave a few minutes at the end to confirm no row was missed and no double-shading remains.
Do the easy and medium items first so that time pressure never costs you marks you could have banked.
