What Section A contains
Section A of Paper 2 (4531/2) is the compulsory core: 8 structured questions worth 60 marks, and you answer all of them. Each question is built around a stem, often with a diagram, table or graph, and is broken into parts such as (a), (b) and (c) with marks shown beside each part.
Because Section A holds 60 of the paper's 100 marks, it is where most of your grade is decided. Questions follow the 5:3:2 difficulty spread, so early parts are usually the most accessible and later parts stretch you.
A scientific calculator is allowed; there is no formula sheet, so recall each formula yourself. Read the mark in brackets as a direct instruction for how much to write.
How to attack a structured question
Work the mark allocation, not your instinct about length.
- Read the whole stem and study any diagram or data before writing.
- Match points to marks: a 2-mark part usually needs two distinct points.
- For a calculation, write the formula, substitute with units, then state the answer with its unit. Example: v = u + at, so v = 0 m s⁻¹ + (2 m s⁻² × 5 s), giving v = 10 m s⁻¹.
- Read values off graphs or tables carefully, including units on the axes.
Answer the command word exactly: state gives a fact, explain gives a reason, calculate needs working.
Timing and mark security in Section A
Paper 2 gives 150 minutes for 100 marks, about 1.5 minutes per mark. On that basis 60 marks of Section A deserve roughly 80 to 90 minutes, leaving time for Sections B and C plus a review.
- Do the parts you know first within each question; do not freeze on one difficult sub-part.
- Always show working so method marks are available even if a final figure is wrong.
- Include a unit on every quantity; a missing unit often costs the mark.
- Never leave a part blank; a relevant statement can still earn something.
Because every mark here is compulsory, disciplined pacing across all 8 questions matters more than perfecting any single one.
