The numbers, from the official format
- Section B: 2 items worth 20 marks, answer one
- Paper 2 carries 100 marks in total
How a 1-to-1 lesson helps
A one-to-one teacher can watch you tackle this exact question type and correct the technique on the spot, the fastest way to stop losing the same marks. Message us with your form and where you struggle.
What Section B contains
Section B of Paper 2 gives you a choice: 2 questions, and you answer only one, for 20 marks. These are extended structured questions with longer parts than Section A, and they reward depth: fuller explanations, multi-step calculations, and sometimes a labelled diagram.
Each question is split into parts with marks shown, and the parts usually build from recall toward application. Because you choose, the smart move is to pick the question you can score most fully across all its parts, not the one whose topic simply looks familiar.
A scientific calculator is allowed and there is no formula sheet, so the formula for whichever question you pick must come from memory.
Choosing the right question
Spend a minute deciding before you commit.
- Skim both questions and every part, not just the opening line.
- Estimate how many marks you can realistically secure in each; choose the higher total.
- Check the later, higher-mark parts, since they often decide the difference.
- Once you choose, commit fully; do not split effort across both.
Answer only one question. Attempting both wastes time you need elsewhere and does not add marks, because only one Section B answer counts.
Structuring a 20-mark answer
Treat the 20 marks as a budget spread across the parts.
- Allocate writing to each part's marks: a 6-mark part needs more developed points than a 2-mark one.
- For calculations, show the formula, substitute with units, and give the answer with its unit. Example: P = VI, so P = 12 V × 0.5 A, giving P = 6 W.
- Draw any requested diagram with a ruler and label it clearly.
- For explanations, link cause to effect and use correct physics terms.
At about 1.5 minutes per mark, budget roughly 25 to 30 minutes for Section B, and keep working visible so method marks are never lost.
