What Section C contains
Section C of Paper 2 is a single question worth 20 marks, and you answer it; there is no choice here. It is the highest-order part of the written paper, testing how well you apply physics to a situation rather than simply recall it.
The question is split into parts with marks shown, and it typically asks you to reason, justify a decision, or work through an applied scenario.
Because it sits at the demanding end of the 5:3:2 difficulty spread, the marks are earned by clear reasoning and correct use of principles. A scientific calculator is allowed and there is no formula sheet, so any formula you use must be recalled.

How to approach the Section C question
Section C often blends explanation, calculation and a reasoned choice.
- Read the whole question first; later parts may reshape how you answer earlier ones.
- Where a table of options is given, evaluate each against the physics asked, then justify your final choice.
- For explanations, link cause and effect with correct terms and one idea per mark.
- For calculations, show the formula, substitute with units, and give the answer with its unit. Example: E = mcΔθ, so E = 2 kg × 4200 J kg⁻¹ °C⁻¹ × 5 °C, giving E = 42000 J.
Justify decisions with physics, not opinion, so every claim is anchored to a principle.
Timing and finishing well
At about 1.5 minutes per mark, budget roughly 25 to 30 minutes for Section C's 20 marks.
- Do not rush the reading; a misread scenario can cost several parts at once.
- Answer to the mark allocation, giving a distinct point or step per mark.
- Keep units on every quantity and every calculation line.
- If time is short, secure the accessible parts first, then extend the reasoning parts.
Because Section C is compulsory and carries a full 20 marks, leaving it unfinished costs more than a weak part elsewhere. Guard enough time in your Paper 2 plan to give it a complete, reasoned answer.
