Common mistakes we see in past-year practice

Across many students' past-year practice, the same avoidable mistakes appear again and again, and recognising them is the fastest way to stop repeating them. The most frequent is the missing or wrong unit, which can cost a mark even when the number is right.

Misreading the command word is another common one: answering "explain" with a bare fact, or calculating when the question only asked you to state. Careless unit conversion, such as leaving a length in centimetres before substituting, quietly ruins otherwise correct calculations.

Graph errors are also frequent: cramped scales, imprecise points, a best-fit line forced through the origin, or a gradient read from too small a triangle.

The technique that moves the needle is turning this list into a personal checklist. Before you finish any question, glance at whether units, command words, conversions, and graph work are all sound. A short, deliberate check catches most of these losses.
