Structured question technique

Structured questions in Paper 2 are designed to lead you from easy to hard within one context. Early parts usually test recall or a single definition, while later parts ask you to apply, calculate, or explain. Recognising this shape helps you answer at the right depth for each part.

Command words are your guide. "State" or "name" wants a short answer; "explain" wants a reason with a cause-and-effect link; "calculate" wants full working. Answering an "explain" with a one-word response, or over-writing a "state", both waste effort.

The technique that moves the needle is reading the whole question first, because later parts often hint at what the earlier ones are building towards, and diagrams or data given at the top usually serve every part.

A simple plan: practise past structured questions while underlining the command word in each part, then check that your answer length and content match what that word demands.
