Read the shape, not just the numbers
A graph tells a story before any calculation. Learn what common shapes mean in physics:
- A straight line through the origin means two quantities are directly proportional.
- A straight line with an intercept means a linear relationship with an offset.
- A curve means the relationship is not constant, such as acceleration changing.
Practise describing, in words, what a graph shows before you touch its numbers. This is the understanding examiners test.
Plot real data by hand
Screens hide the skills the exam checks, so use graph paper:
- Choose a uniform scale that spreads the data across most of the grid.
- Label each axis with the quantity and unit.
- Plot each point carefully and draw a thin best-fit line or smooth curve.
Take data tables from your textbook or past Paper 3 questions and plot them yourself, then compare with the given answer.
Practise gradients and intercepts
Most graph marks come from using the graph, not drawing it. Practise until these are automatic:
- Find a gradient using a large triangle, reading both coordinates with units.
- Read an intercept where the line crosses the axis, with its unit.
- State what the gradient or intercept represents physically.
Build a simple home routine
Keep graph paper, a sharp pencil and a ruler in one place so there is no friction to starting. Plot one or two graphs a week and check your axes, scale, line and gradient working against worked solutions.
