Definition
The process of converting alternating current into direct current, usually using diodes.
In exam terms
Rectification is the process of converting alternating current (a.c.) into direct current (d.c.), usually using diodes. In half-wave rectification a single diode passes only one half of each a.c. cycle.
In full-wave rectification four diodes in a bridge arrangement redirect both halves in the same direction, giving a smoother d.c. output.
Example of correct use: a bridge rectifier of four diodes carries out full-wave rectification so that the negative halves of the a.c. supply are flipped to become positive.

Do not confuse rectification with smoothing. Rectification (using diodes) turns a.c. into a one-directional but bumpy d.c.; smoothing (using a capacitor) then reduces the ripple so the output is closer to a steady d.c.
In Paper 2 you may be asked to explain half-wave and full-wave rectification or to describe the output; state that diodes only let current pass one way, so the reverse halves are blocked or redirected.
