How SPM Physics Is Marked

In the subjective paper, marks are awarded line by line, for the formula, the substitution, the unit and the final answer. Show every step and you collect method marks even if the number is wrong.

  • Paper 1 is scored dichotomously; Papers 2 and 3 analytically

How a 1-to-1 lesson helps

A one-to-one teacher can watch you tackle this exact question type and correct the technique on the spot, the fastest way to stop losing the same marks. Message us with your form and where you struggle.

How marks are actually awarded

Understanding how the marks work changes how you write answers.

  • Paper 1 objective items are dichotomous: 1 mark for the correct option, 0 for a wrong one, with no partial credit.
  • Paper 2 structured and extended questions are point-based: each mark is tied to a specific correct point or step, so a 3-mark part needs three creditable points.
  • Paper 3 awards marks for the science process skills you demonstrate in the practical.

Because Paper 2 rewards steps, always show your working. Method marks can be earned for the correct formula and substitution even when the final figure is wrong, so a partly correct calculation is far better than a bare, wrong answer.

What loses marks

Many lost marks come from presentation, not misunderstanding.

  • A missing unit on a calculated answer usually costs the final mark.
  • Rounding too early or giving the wrong number of significant figures can lose accuracy marks.
  • Vague wording where a precise physics term is expected does not score.
  • Unlabelled diagrams or graph axes without quantity and unit lose the labelling marks.
  • Answering the wrong command word, such as describing when asked to explain, misses the point the mark is for.

Answer to the mark allocation shown in brackets: it tells you how many creditable points the examiner is looking for, so aim for exactly that many.

How the papers combine into your grade

Your SPM Physics grade comes from all three papers together.

  • Paper 1 carries 40 marks, Paper 2 carries 100 marks and Paper 3 carries 15 marks, and these are combined into your overall result.
  • Across the subject the 5:3:2 difficulty spread means about half the marks sit on the more accessible questions.
  • The practical strategy that follows is simple: secure the low and medium marks across every paper before spending long on the hardest parts.

A scientific calculator is allowed and there is no formula sheet, so recalling formulae reliably is itself worth marks. Steady accuracy on accessible questions usually moves a grade more than a few hard-won marks on the toughest ones.

Frequently asked questions

What language are lessons in?
Lessons are in English; SPM Physics papers are bilingual (BM/EN).
Do you predict the questions?
No. We teach technique and the syllabus; we do not predict exam questions.
Are method marks given if my final answer is wrong?

Yes, in Paper 2. Showing the correct formula and substitution can earn method marks even when the final figure is wrong, so always show your working.

Is a Paper 1 answer all or nothing?

Yes. Objective items are dichotomous: 1 mark for the correct option and 0 for a wrong one, with no partial credit.

What is the most common way to lose easy marks?

Missing units, wrong significant figures, unlabelled diagrams or graph axes, and answering the wrong command word are the usual culprits.
