What Paper 3 is
Paper 3 (4531/3) is the practical test. It is one question worth 15 marks, with 5 minutes to plan and 40 minutes to carry out the work.
For SPM 2026 it is held on 16 November 2026, earlier than the written papers.
Paper 3 does not test how many facts you can recall; it assesses Science Process Skills: how you observe, measure, record, tabulate, plot, analyse and draw a conclusion from an experiment. A scientific calculator is allowed and there is no formula sheet, so any relationship you need must be recalled.
The marks reward good scientific practice, so treating the session as a disciplined experiment rather than a rushed task is exactly what earns them.
The science process skills examiners reward
Marks in Paper 3 track the skills of a careful experimenter.
- Identify variables clearly: the manipulated variable, the responding variable, and the fixed variable.
- Record readings to a consistent precision with units, for example a length as 12.5 cm rather than 12.5.
- Tabulate neatly, with each column headed by the quantity and its unit, such as time / s and length / cm.
- Plot a large, clear graph: label both axes with quantity and unit, choose a sensible scale, plot points accurately, and draw a single best-fit line.
- Analyse the graph and state the relationship, then give a conclusion tied to the aim.
Consistency, honesty in your readings, and clear presentation are what turn correct work into full marks.
Practical technique on the day
Use the structure of the session to protect every mark.
- Use the 5 minutes of planning to read the whole question, note the variables, and sketch your table before touching apparatus.
- Take readings carefully and repeat where sensible; write each value straight into the table with its unit.
- Keep decimal places consistent across a column so the data looks measured, not invented.
- Draw the graph large enough to fill the grid, and only then read gradients or values from it, including units.
Because there is no formula sheet, recall any equation you need for analysis. Finish with a conclusion that answers the aim directly.
