The mistakes, and the fix
- Mixing up Semiconductor and Doping. Semiconductor: A material whose electrical conductivity lies between that of a conductor and an insulator, such as silicon. Doping: The process of adding a small, controlled amount of impurity to a pure semiconductor to change its electrical properties.
- Mixing up n-type semiconductor and p-type semiconductor. n-type semiconductor: A semiconductor doped so that free electrons are the majority charge carriers. p-type semiconductor: A semiconductor doped so that positive holes are the majority charge carriers.
- Mixing up Semiconductor diode and Rectification. Semiconductor diode: A component made from a p-n junction that allows current to flow in one direction only. Rectification: The process of converting alternating current into direct current, usually using diodes.
- Mixing up Transistor and Light-emitting diode (LED). Transistor: A semiconductor device with three terminals used to amplify signals or to act as an electronic switch. Light-emitting diode (LED): A semiconductor diode that emits light when a current flows through it in the forward direction.
- Mixing up Electron and Thermionic emission. Electron: A stable subatomic particle carrying a negative electric charge, found orbiting the nucleus of an atom. Thermionic emission: The release of electrons from the surface of a heated metal when it is given enough thermal energy.
- Dropping the unit on the final line, an answer without its SI unit is incomplete.
- Rounding early: keep full calculator values and round only the final answer to sensible significant figures.
- Answering "describe" with a definition, describe means say what happens; define means say what it is.
- Forgetting that direction matters for vector quantities in this chapter, state the sign convention before substituting.
- Reading a graph gradient from two data points instead of two well-separated points on the best-fit line.
- Leaving a diagram unlabelled, the label is usually the mark.
How a 1-to-1 teacher uses this list
In lessons the teacher marks a student's own work against this list, then re-teaches only the items that actually appeared, which is why 1-to-1 fixes habits that group classes miss.
Exam tip
Units on every calculation line; no formula is provided in the SPM Physics papers.
