How to approach

These are direct plug-in problems: identify the formula and substitute. Get these automatic first.

The method

  1. List what is given, with units.
  2. Choose the formula and rearrange for the unknown.
  3. Substitute with units on every line.
  4. Round to the correct significant figures.

Worked examples

Horizontal component of a force
Fₓ = F cos θ
A force F = 50 N acts at θ = 30° to the horizontal. Fₓ = F cos θ = 50 × cos 30° = 50 × 0.866 = 43.3 N.
Vertical component of a force
F_y = F sin θ
A force F = 50 N acts at θ = 30° to the horizontal. F_y = F sin θ = 50 × sin 30° = 50 × 0.5 = 25 N.
Hooke's law
F = kx
A spring of constant k = 200 N m⁻¹ is stretched by x = 0.05 m. F = kx = 200 × 0.05 = 10 N.
Elastic potential energy
E = ½Fx = ½kx²
A spring with k = 200 N m⁻¹ is stretched by x = 0.05 m. E = ½kx² = ½ × 200 × 0.05² = ½ × 200 × 0.0025 = 0.25 J.

Where marks are lost

Skipping units, rounding too early, and writing only the final answer (which loses method marks in Paper 2).

Practise these

Try each formula above with your own numbers, showing every line. Bring anything you get stuck on to a one-to-one lesson.

Formulas you use for Force and Motion II calculations

These foundation problems draw on the 4 relationships in Force and Motion II. None is printed in the exam, so recall each and write its symbols with units before substituting:

  • Fₓ = F cos θ, Horizontal component of a force
  • F_y = F sin θ, Vertical component of a force
  • F = kx, Hooke's law
  • E = ½Fx = ½kx², Elastic potential energy

A worked example, with units on every line

Using Fₓ = F cos θ (Fₓ = horizontal component of force (N); F = force (N); θ = angle to the horizontal (°)):

A force F = 50 N acts at θ = 30° to the horizontal.
Fₓ = F cos θ = 50 × cos 30° = 50 × 0.866 = 43.3 N.

Where the marks are, and the common mistakes

In Paper 2, calculation marks are awarded line by line: the formula, the substitution with units, and the final answer with its unit and sensible significant figures. Watch this trap: Use cos for the component adjacent to the angle (usually horizontal).

Measure θ from the horizontal. For foundation items, the numbers are direct, the marks are in showing the method, not just the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Are formulas given in the exam?
No. You must recall SPM Physics formulas.
Is a formula sheet given for these calculations?
No. SPM Physics (4531) provides no formula sheet, recall each formula and write units on every line.
What does the easy band mean?
Foundation items use the formula directly; marks come from showing the method.
Can a tutor mark my working?
Yes, in a one-to-one lesson the teacher checks each line and fixes the exact step that loses marks. From RM50/hr, paid trial available.
