How to approach

The method

  1. List what is given, with units.
  2. Choose the formula and rearrange for the unknown.
  3. Substitute with units on every line.
  4. Round to the correct significant figures.

Worked examples

Horizontal component of a force
Fₓ = F cos θ
A force F = 50 N acts at θ = 30° to the horizontal. Fₓ = F cos θ = 50 × cos 30° = 50 × 0.866 = 43.3 N.
Vertical component of a force
F_y = F sin θ
A force F = 50 N acts at θ = 30° to the horizontal. F_y = F sin θ = 50 × sin 30° = 50 × 0.5 = 25 N.
Hooke's law
F = kx
A spring of constant k = 200 N m⁻¹ is stretched by x = 0.05 m. F = kx = 200 × 0.05 = 10 N.
Elastic potential energy
E = ½Fx = ½kx²
A spring with k = 200 N m⁻¹ is stretched by x = 0.05 m. E = ½kx² = ½ × 200 × 0.05² = ½ × 200 × 0.0025 = 0.25 J.

Where marks are lost

Skipping units, rounding too early, and writing only the final answer (which loses method marks in Paper 2).

Formulas you use for Force and Motion II calculations

A worked example, with units on every line

Using F = kx (F = force (N); k = spring (force) constant (N m⁻¹); x = extension (m)):

A spring of constant k = 200 N m⁻¹ is stretched by x = 0.05 m.
F = kx = 200 × 0.05 = 10 N.

Where the marks are, and the common mistakes

In Paper 2, calculation marks are awarded line by line: the formula, the substitution with units, and the final answer with its unit and sensible significant figures. Watch this trap: x is the extension (change in length), not the total length.

Valid only up to the elastic limit. For mid-level items, expect one rearrangement and a unit conversion.
